Nothing but a spaceless place is a photographic series by Andrej Lamut, made between 2020 and 2023. It starts from Carl Gustav Jung’s idea of the persona, the social mask we use to communicate, to adapt and to fill different roles. We need that mask to live among others, yet it can also confine us and keep us away from the more vulnerable, suppressed or authentic parts of ourselves. Lamut comes to this territory indirectly. He builds an ambiguous visual world of dark passages, distorted bodies, shadows, rocks, forests, water and architectural spaces. Figures appear fragmented, obscured or displaced, and landscapes read as extensions of inner states. Strong contrasts, unusual perspectives and transformations of the visible give familiar scenes an unsettling, dreamlike quality.

The photographs move between attraction and unease, between fear of what is hidden within us and the wish to find it. Visibility and concealment pull against each other throughout. The body shows up as a shadow, a reflection or a distortion, while caves, corridors, crossroads and deep water suggest a journey into an interior landscape that cannot be mapped with certainty. A large-format self-portrait faces the viewer directly and turns the act of looking back onto the person doing it. Elsewhere, distorted faces work like unstable mirrors and raise the question of what is left when the mask begins to crack. Lamut treats the self as layered, shifting and partly unknowable. Through darkness, vulnerability and estrangement, the series still holds open the possibility that beneath masks, fears and imposed roles there may be something authentic, fragile and luminous.
