The "云云" project plays with a delicious ambiguity baked into Chinese itself: "云" means both "to speak" and, phonetically, echoes "芸芸"—the vast, teeming multiplicity of us. Now cloud computing has crashed the party, collapsing ancient poetry, human crowds, and data servers into one glittering metaphor. The project asks: as communication evolves from Confucian dialogues to Instagram stories, what actually changes? And what, stubbornly, refuses to?

From Plato's agora to the scholar's study, humans have always gathered to talk—as if speech itself were the oxygen of civilization. But then came the internet, algorithms, and the bewildering promise that everyone is an artist. Except we're not. We're all media now, performing endlessly for invisible audiences, swimming in deepfakes and data breaches, our privacy a quaint historical artifact. The ancient question—who am I?—has become genuinely destabilizing in an age when we're simultaneously author, character, and spectator.

So the "云云" project does something radical and old-fashioned: it brings nineteen influential voices offline for real conversations, captured in photographs, stripped of filters and feeds. It's a small rebellion—an insistence that genuine human exchange still means something, that presence matters, that communication is about becoming something together, not just broadcasting into the void.
