The Encyclopedia of Movie Cats is an A to Z of felines on screen, with more than 1,000 cats and over 1,900 film stills.
Cats have always found their way onto our screens, and they have never turned down a part. They play pets, villains and accomplices. They travel on spaceships, wear human clothes, inherit large sums of money and drink spilled blood to turn into cat-woman hybrids. The only limit to their movie credits is a director’s imagination, and the cats clearly have none of their own to spare.
The entries run in alphabetical order, from Abby Barnes’ cat in The Truth About Cats & Dogs (1996) to the Zip-A-Tone Kitten in Zip-Tone-Cat-Tune (1972). In between you meet Puss in Boots and Mr. Bigglesworth, Holly Golightly’s orange tabby and Jones from the Alien movies. Unnamed alley cats and scaredy cats streak across the screen, and the book catches them mid-streak. Bastet’s messengers and witch familiars are listed too, next to real-life cat actors who have IMDbs of their own.
Nineteen archetypes keep the cast in order: Alley Cats, Bad Omen Cats, Bakeneko, Bastet’s Messengers, Cat Lady Cats, Cats in Clothes, Felines and Femininity, Killer Cats, Left Bank Cats, Man’s Best Friend, Puppet Cats, Scaredy Cats, Sex Kitten, Space Cats, Talking Cats, Villain’s Cats, Witch’s Cats, Working Cats and Writer’s Cats. Original essays take on Bad Omen Cats, Cat Lady Cats, Talking Cats and more.
