mijinko-by-eriko-masaoka
Mijinko by Eriko Masaoka

The book is long and narrow, and its pictures come from contact sheets, so each frame sits beside the next like part of a strip of film. Turning the pages feels like a camera moving through two people’s lives, staying with them for a while before it moves on.

The text is spoken in the first person plural, and it begins with a memory: a voice that once thought of “us” as mijinko, or water fleas, drifting particles. The voice sees the universe as far away, yet it also finds a whole universe in front of it. When one mijinko meets another, their eyes meet and their hearts commune. Their legs move forward, stop, retreat and extend to the side. From countless worldlines, countless moments are born.

The voice sees the scene before it as though drifting, while moments follow one another. Nebulous and floaty, yet standing firm, as if constantly moving forward and putting down roots at once. Sometimes “we” are like trees or plants, sometimes like mijinko, and yet we are warm-blooded creatures too. Linking what was before us then with what is before us now is a feature of the life forms we are.

Mijinko are amazing. No matter how tiny, combine that tiny strength and each tiny moment, and the world in front of us can be changed. Combine our warmth, and perhaps we can do even more to change what is before us.
